A rare antique Edwardian English 15 carat gold long guard necklace chain. Could be able to wear as a 2/3 rows chain.
Variously known as a long guard, guard, or muff chains and were variously used at different periods for suspending ladies watches, keys to the wine cellar or tea caddy, and latterly for passing through a muff to keep her hands warm. The common denominator for all of these chains is the length which is usually around 50 -60 inches to facilitate the traditional uses.
